In Edmonton that threshold is typically reached in October and lasts into April, so most local drivers change over in October and back in April. Shoulder-season nights are colder than afternoons, so plan for the overnight low rather than the daytime high.
Reading your tire size
Your size is moulded into the sidewall and looks like 225/65R17 102T. 225 is the section width in millimetres, 65 is the sidewall height as a percentage of that width, R17 is the rim diameter in inches, and 102T is the load index and speed rating.

What the 3PMSF snowflake means
The three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) marking indicates the tire met an industry snow-traction test. The older M+S marking is not the same test.
We only show a 3PMSF badge on a tire when that exact size and part number is confirmed as snowflake-rated by the manufacturer. If you don't see the badge, treat that tire as unconfirmed rather than assuming it qualifies.
Winter vs all-weather
A dedicated winter tire is built for cold months and is swapped off in spring. An all-weather tire is designed to stay on year-round, and many carry the 3PMSF marking.
All-weather saves you a seasonal changeover and a second set of wheels. A dedicated winter set is the more specialised choice for deep cold and snow. Which is right depends on your driving, your parking and your budget — not on one being simply better.
